Oppo unveils its first semi-in-ear buds, the Enco Air5s, and the more traditional Enco Air5

Oppo is launching the Enco Air5s, its first “semi-in-ear” buds. This means that the in-ear part of them is plastic without a rubber ear tip. This design makes for more comfortable wearing experience (and it helps that the buds are lighter too), but it doesn’t seal the ear canal fully. If you prefer the more traditional design, there is the new Oppo Enco Air5 (no “s”).

The Air5s are some of the lightest at 3.9g per bud – this is with a 40.5mAh battery inside, which is enough for up to 9 hours of listening time without ANC (Active Noise Cancellation). With ANC, the listening time drops to 4.5 hours. This is just for the buds on their own – when combined with their charging case, the total listening time goes up to 48h (no ANC) or 25h (with ANC). The battery is rated for 1,000 charge cycles by TÜV Rheinland.

The looser fit improves wearing comfort, but it also lets more environmental noise in. To solve this issue, Oppo developed the Real-time Adaptive Noise Cancellation technology. It adjusts its noise cancellation in real time based on how the buds are worn, the noise around you and your ear canal shape. This system works at an 800kHz sampling rate.

Additionally, there is the Tailored Voice-Cancelling System, which specifically works to reduce the sound of nearby conversations further than the base ANC system.

The Oppo Enco Air5s feature 12mm dynamic drivers with a 20Hz-20kHz frequency response rate. There is a 10-band custom equalizer in the HeyMelody app to help you tune the sound to just how you like it.

The buds use Bluetooth 6.0 with Dual Connection. They have a Slide Volume Control and can be used to summon a digital assistant or launch Spotify. Plus, there is AI Translate for real-time dubbing. The buds are rated IP55, so they aren’t afraid of sweat.

The Oppo Enco Air5 have a more traditional design with rubber ear tips. These seal against your ear canal, which isn’t as comfortable, but it provides superior passive noise isolation.

With their ANC system active, the Air5 buds reduce 52dB of noise up to 5,000Hz. The buds are slightly heavier at 4.3g each and they have larger 62mAh batteries inside. This is good for 13 hours of listening without ANC and 6.5 hours with ANC. With the case, the total listening time is 54 hours (no ANC) or 27 hours (with ANC). The charging case on the Air5 has the same battery as on the Air5s (530mAh).

Like their siblings, the Air5 buds have 12mm drivers (20Hz-20kHz) and are rated IP55. They have multi-point connectivity, this time with Bluetooth 6.1. In low-latency mode, there is a 47ms delay on the buds and a total of 94ms across the full audio chain. The HeyMelody apps offers a 10-band equalizer as well as Oppo Alive Audio (the company’s spatial audio implementation).
