For a film about 26/11, the biggest disappointment is how rarely it makes us feel the full impact of the attack. This can never be just an Ujjwal Nikam story. It is about the attack, the attacker and the attacked, more than the man in the black coat fighting the case. But somehow the focus remains so much on him that the film never creates the impact it had intended. The subject had enough emotional heft to knock the wind out of you. The film, unfortunately, keeps stopping short.

Overall, Prahaar has a story that should have been difficult to look away from, yet it occasionally tests your patience with its own digressions. The 26/11 attack remains one of the darkest scars on our nation’s memory. A film about Ujjwal Nikam had the opportunity to capture the fight for justice with the emotional weight it deserved. Instead, it gets caught between a courtroom drama and a family saga, losing some of its grip on both in the process. The wounds of 26/11 do not need another cinematic reminder of their existence; they deserve a retelling that does justice to the magnitude. Prahaar comes a little close.

‘Prahaar’ tells the story of the legal battle that led to Kasab’s conviction and eventual execution, but it never quite gets under the skin of the prosecutor at its centre. Nikam is rarely seen grappling with the pressure of handling a trial of such consequence, and the strain his work places on his family is not explored with enough depth. These gaps matter because they leave the film feeling more like a retelling of a landmark case than an account of the man who helped bring it to its conclusi…

The film’s intentions are sincere, and its performances, especially those by Rao, Prabhakar and Kher, give it some much-needed force. But a story of this magnitude needed a more engaging screenplay and a courtroom drama that could hold its own against the history it seeks to portray. Prahaar: The Ujjwal Nikam Story is worth watching for the story it revisits and the people it remembers. As a courtroom drama, however, it leaves too much to be desired. Hence, it gets 2.5 out of 5 stars
