Tata Punch Is India’s No.1 SUV; Fronx Beats Nexon, Creta Sales Drop


The Indian automobile industry kicked off the new financial year on a strong note, with most car manufacturers registered their highest monthly sales in April 2026. While compact SUVs continued to lead the market, SUVs from other segments along with MPVs, sedans and hatchbacks also recorded healthy demand.

The Tata Punch continued to be India’s best-selling SUV with total sales of 19,107 units in April 2026 compared to 12,496 units in April 2025, recording an impressive 53% YoY (year-on-year) growth. The subcompact SUV remains popular among buyers for its modern styling, compact footprint, strong safety and affordability.

The Maruti Fronx registered total sales of 18,829 units to become India’s second top-selling SUV, beating the Tata Nexon and Hyundai Creta. In April 2025, the carmaker had sold 14,345 units of the compact crossover, translating into a healthy 31% YoY growth.

The Tata Nexon slipped to the third position with sales of 18,126 units against 15,457 units in the same month last year, reflecting a 17% YoY growth.

The Hyundai Creta witnessed a significant YoY decline of 17%. A total of 15,291 units of the SUV were sold in April 2026 as opposed to 17,016 units sold in April 2025.

The Mahindra Scorpio saw a marginal YoY decline of 5% with total sales standing at 14,719 units against 15,534 units in the same month previous year.

The Maruti Brezza and Victoris secured the sixth and seventh positions with sales of 14,124 units and 13,701 units, respectively. However, the Brezza posted a 17% YoY decline.

The Hyundai Venue clocked total sales of 12,420 units compared to 7,953 units in the corresponding month last year, marking a strong 56% YoY growth.

Kia’s Seltos and Sonet also made it to the list of the top 10 best-selling SUVs with sales of 10,566 units and 10,537 units, respectively. Both SUVs witnessed significant YoY growth of 72% and 31%, respectively.
