TCL CSOT Super Pixel display debuts with promises of better image quality, lower power use


TCL CSOT has a tradition of bringing cool new display technologies to the MWC and the 2026 edition is no different. This year, the company is debuting its Super Pixel Technology and showing off advances in Inkjet-printed OLED displays.

The core innovation of Super Pixel displays is how they differ from the most popular type of OLED displays available today that rely on sub-pixel rendering (SPR). TCL adds just 1.8% more sub-pixels than a typical SPR display would have but achieves higher sharpness and draws a clearer image.

SPR displays need to use sub-pixels from neighboring pixels to achieve the desired color (since individual pixels don’t have all three Red, Green and Blue channels). This means that the display controller has to convert the incoming RGB image to a format suitable for the panel. The streamlined Super Pixel design reduces the processing load on the controller, which reduces power draw by up to 25%.

Additionally, Super Pixel displays can have higher refresh rates – they can go up to 40% higher than typical displays today.

TCL CSOT announced that it has started construction on its 8.6-generation Inkjet-printed (IJP) OLED production line – when it is completed, it will be the first in the world. The company touts several advantages of using printers to produce displays.

For one, printers are easily adaptable to different panel sizes. Also, the process is simpler than using the vacuum procedures required for traditional OLED manufacture. IJP OLED displays can have 50%-60% larger emission areas, which makes them more efficient. This in turn reduces the display’s power consumption. Such printers can also create Real Stripe RGB panels for superior image quality and color accuracy.
