Toyota Starlet Global NCAP – Glanza’s Export Version Scores 0 Stars


The South African-spec Toyota Starlet hatchback was recently subjected to the Global NCAP crash testing, where the hatchback scored a disappointing 0 star safety rating. It’s important to note that it’s essentially the same as the Toyota Glanza sold in India, albeit powered by a more powerful 105PS, 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine.

 The Starlet is manufactured in India and exported to South Africa. In India, the Toyota Glanza is a rebadged version of the Maruti Baleno, which secured a 4 star safety rating in Bharat NCAP crash tests.

The Toyota Starlet scored 0 stars for adult occupant protection with 0 out of 34 points, and 3 stars for the child occupant protection with 29.33 out of 49 points. The tested model was equipped with safety features such as dual airbags, electronic stability control, seatbelt reminders for all seats, Isofix child seat anchor points and pretensioners for the driver and co-driver seatbelts. Do note that the India-spec Toyota Glanza comes with 6 airbags as standard.

Toyota Starlet Adult Occupant Protection Results

In the frontal offset deformable barrier test, the Starlet offered ‘Good’ protection for the driver’s neck and left tibia. Protection for the driver’s head, chest and right tibia protection was rated as ‘Adequate’. For the front passenger, head and neck protection was rated as ‘Good’, while chest and tibia protection was rated as ‘Adequate’.

The hatchback only provided ‘Marginal’ protection for both the driver’s and co-driver’s thighs. Protection for the driver’s feet was rated as ‘Marginal’. Furthermore, the bodyshell integrated was rated as ‘unstable’.

In the side movable deformable barrier test, the Starlet offered ‘Good’ protection for the pelvis, ‘Adequate’ protection for the abdomen and ‘Poor’ protection for head and chest. The side pole impact test wasn’t conducted due as the vehicle lacked side head protection airbags.

Toyota Starlet Child Occupant Protection Results

For the 18-month-old child dummy, the Starlet scored 6.71 out of maximum 8 points in the frontal and the full 4 out of 4 points in the side crash tests. For the 3-year-old child dummy, the hatchback received 2.81 out of 8 points in the frontal and 0 out of 4 points in the side crash tests.

In the Child Restraint System (CRS) installation assessment, the Starlet scored 10.81 out of 12 points. However, it secured 5 out of a maximum 13 points in the vehicle assessment score.
