Ashish R. Mohan has written a story which has its heart in the right place as it underlines the uneasy truth that children have no time for their parents once they (children) get busy with their own families. However, the screenplay, penned by Ashish R. Mohan, Bunty Rathore and Saahil S. Sharma, is so convoluted, long-winding and round-and-about that the heartwarming story fails to have the desired impact. On the whole, Daadi Ki Shaadi is a weak fare which will go largely unnoticed.

Overall, Daadi Ki Shaadi has a few genuinely funny moments and heartfelt emotions, but it ultimately becomes a drag because it cannot decide what it truly wants to say. In trying to become a social commentary on modern families, the film overloads itself with messaging, and somewhere in all that noise, its emotional core gets lost.

If only the rest of it had stayed on course, this would have been a perfect summer holiday family entertainer. But after a light-hearted first half, in which the flaws are not so glaring, it turns into a creaky melodrama, with lectures on old-age and loneliness and filial responsibilities. Sigh. And just why can’t grandmas get married? We’re still controlling women whichever age they reach, because, duh, they be wimmen.

This isn’t Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon. So there’s no room for farcical comedy. Daadi Ki Shaadi is a film that relies more on situations than slapstick. It brings a smile to your face once it ends and even when the proceedings are going on. The film also proves why veterans will never lose their mojo if you allow them to have their cake and eat it too. Age will always be a number.

In the end, you mostly feel sorry for Neetu Singh, who remains Daadi Ki Shaadi’s lone genuinely endearing presence, and for R Sarathkumar, trying hard to navigate the pauses in his dialogue delivery while maintaining stoic dignity. And then you feel sorry for the rest of the capable cast too, trapped in storytelling ideas and emotional beats that should have been retired at least two decades ago.

Despite its flaws, Daadi Ki Shadi is being viewed as a clean and meaningful family entertainer, one that leaves audiences smiling while also encouraging them to reflect on their own relationships with loved ones.

Still, for audiences craving clean, family-oriented entertainment in an era dominated by action spectacles and dark thrillers, Daadi Ki Shaadi offers a refreshing change of pace. While occasionally over-the-top, the film comes off mostly sincere.
