Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. unveiled two new NEV (New Energy Vehicle) SUV concept cars at the recently concluded Beijing International Automotive Exhibition in China. The Nissan Urban SUV PHEV concept draws design inspiration from the NX8 and the brand’s future SUVs, and is aimed at young Chinese customers. Meanwhile, the Nissan Terrano PHEV concept is built on the brand’s off-road heritage, marking the comeback of the iconic nameplate.

The carmaker has confirmed that the production-ready versions of both these PHEV SUVs will debut within one year. Furthermore, Nissan has planned three additional NEV models for the Chinese market.

Nissan’s Plug-in Hybrid SUV For India?
According to Autocar India, the Nisan Terrano PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) concept-based SUV could make its way to India. The Japanese automaker is currently evaluating “its own and distinct models” for the Indian market. While the carmaker hasn’t revealed specific names and details yet, these expected to be models developed under the Nissan-Dongfeng Motor Corporation joint venture. One of them could be the Nissan Terrano PHEV concept-based SUV.
Nissan & Dongfeng JV Explained
Nissan and Dongfeng Motor Corporation announced a comprehensive collaboration agreement in 2002 to manufacture products cost effective products packed with advanced technology. While Nissan provides platforms, powertrains and technology, Dongfeng manages the local supply chain, cost engineering and the China-specific EV tech ecosystem. Currently, Nissan operates multiple production facilities in China through this partnership.

How This JV Can Work For India?
Nissan and Dongfeng partnership could prove highly beneficial deal for India. China offers cost-effective manufacturing based along with advanced tech, both of which highly preferred by Indian buyers.
Interestingly, this JV is capable to reduce product development timelines to around 30 months, compared to the typical 60 months. Nissan’s Chennai facility, which has a total production capacity of 5,00,000 units per year, could be used to manufacture Dongfeng-based models for the domestic market.
